Due to increasing population, birds occupy different parts of the islands over a period of time. Different parts / regions / zones offer
1) Different weather patterns (due to closeness to sea, altitude, temperature, humidity etc),
2) Different sources of food
3) Different requirements for survival (coastal / plain predators, camouflage requirements, etc.)
These factors affect the evolution and there will be significant differences between different niches.
Example: Darwin's Finches.

"Open niches" means that there are plenty of opportunities for the birds. Some variations that may not have survived somewhere else may be the perfect variations for one of these niches. Over the years the birds would evolve to fit these open niches by natural selection. If a bird happened to have any unusual characteristic that allowed it to make use of a different food, a different nesting site, or other resource in the environment, then that bird will survive and reproduce. Its offspring are likely to have the same variation.

read Darwin's Theory of Evolution as it was based in part about the variable varieties of finches on the Galapagos islands. Beaks would evolve to allow them to each find a different food source. If not they would all become extinct!

Look to the Galapagos finches of Darwin and see how the beak size varied in respect to the differing seed sizes. Google " Darwin's Finches ".
