No more than heterosexuality.

No, but it is a mental condition, or a condition of the brain. The centers of the brain that control what we like are different in men and women. In homosexual men, this center looks more like a woman's and in homosexual women, it looks more like a mans. It's very much the same thing in the transgendered. The areas of the brain that hold the gender identifiers look like those of the opposite gender, so they really are trapped in the wrong body. Now this does not mean that all gay people are transgendered, the transgendered are the transgendered and homosexuals are homosexuals.
There are some people who have suffered some sort of trauma in their lives that cause them to be more comfortable with the same sex, like a rape or ongoing abuse for interest in sex period (I have a friend who this happened to), but most gay people are born that way and there is really nothing that anyone can do about it, that won't cause more harm that good that is.

It was classified as such until the 1970s, when the American Psychologists' Association realised there wasn't any actual evidence for it being a mental illness and took it off their books.

Having said that, there is evidence that homosexuality produces a chemical change in your brain - whether that counts as mental illness or not, I've no idea. Based on personal experience, I'd say not. :)

No. Just like heterosexuality isn't a mental disease.

Hell yeah!.. just like heterosexuality, bisexuality and even asexuality!! ... Ooh, I know what's the most terrible mental disease of all, 'Idiot'ility!! Symptoms: Victims have too much time on their hands and can't resist from asking stupid question that didn't even need two brain cells to answer, showed signs of bigotry towards things they can't comprehend (I'm guessing that's the effect of having less than two brain cells)
...d'oh! What do YOU think?!

It used to be listed as one quite awhile ago (1973? Could be wrong on the year.) till they realized it wasn't a mental disease and took it off the list.

While the APA removed homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses in the late seventies, many psychiatrists think that this was a disservice to the homosexual community because of the various mental, emotional and behavioural problems that accompany homosexuality.

It's not a disease of any kind. It just is. It's natural, because nature demands variance.
