Have a look at the map at the address below. It shows the common ancestor arising in North America and diverging with distance. The barrier would be the disappearance of the land bridge between North America and Asia.

I think it might've had something to do with the weather (differences in skin because of the sun) and a possible disease of some sort that resulted in genetic differences.
