Processor overclocking refers to tweaking some hidden or not-so-hidden settings to make processor run faster then its stock frequency. Usually this causes the processor to overheat and requires replacing the stock heatsink/fan with the upgraded heatsink or a watercooling system where water is used to cool a processor (much like a car engine).

WARNING: No matter what you may hear there is always a risk that you will permanently damage your computer when overclocking so the general rule is - don't do it (unless you know what you are doing, and you are prepared for possible negative outcome).

Some processors/videocards are marketed as overclocked. This is another way of saying that all the lesser models are in fact purposely underclocked to make several tiers of the same device.

Be aware that once you learn how to overclock properly it may also become addictive. Some people can't envision building a computer without overclocking and tweaking it for maximum speed, even if they are sacrificing stablilty.

I am not saying that all overclocking is inherently bad, but I do urge you to read a lot of documentation and listen to people's opinions before trying it yourself. Also don't try to reach for the sky and stop at a relatively reasonable speed.

Some processors/motherboards/video cards/memory modules are not overclockable almost at all while others are specifically made with the overclocking enthusiast in mind.

Remember - in a lot of cases overclocking voids warranty.

Overclocking is the process of forcing a computer component to run at a higher clock rate than it was designed for or was designated by the manufacturer.

Overclocking is usually practiced by PC enthusiasts in order to increase the performance of their computers. Some hardware enthusiasts purchase low-end computer components which they then overclock to higher speeds, while others overclock high-end components to attain levels of performance beyond original specifications.

Users who overclock their components mainly focus their efforts on processors, video cards, motherboard chipsets, and Random Access Memory (RAM).

I don't think it's overlocking, I think what you mean is "over clocking"

which means your processors are running hot.

Are you by chance asking about over clocking a cpu?
