I have never heard of a hydrogen atom in an excited state. In order to boost an electron up into a higher energy state the orbital shells must be there. Hydrogen has only one orbital shell, which can hold 0, 1 or 2 electrons. If you boost the electron by supplying extra energy you will create a hydrogen ion (with +1 valence) since the electron escapes the atom. This ion is sometimes called "protium" because it consist of a single proton.

The excited state refers to a higher energy state of the electron. For example, the electron can get excited by absorbing a photon whose energy matches the quantum energy difference between the ground state and an excited state.
The other difference is that the ground state is stable, whereas the excited state may degenerate to the ground state or another less excited state (with the corresponding emission of a photon at a given wavelength corresponding to the energy difference). Thus, the excited state may only exist for a very short time.

H in the ground state is bonded with another atom to fill the valence missing electron. such as H2.
H in the excited state is looking for a bond
