how good is the cheerleading at your school? Many schools have very good cheerleading squads as they are hoping to at least perform at regionals with a hope of making the national competition. If you go to a school that has a very competitive squad, they probably will not accept someone with no gymnastics or cheer experience.

I went to a school that always went to nationals (though no trophies) and all our cheerleaders had many years of gymnastics. The min requirement to tryout was to be able to do splits, backhand springs, aerials, and roundoffs.

Traditionally, competitive sports don't like to allow a senior on the squad. Some schools have rules that a senior can't be on JV, but mostly they don't want to spend the time training someone who won't be on the squad again.

You could try and work on your flexibility to learn those moves. Also, talk to a cheerleader at your school. They could let you know how many current seniors are graduating and let you know your chances.

Sorry so bleak of a post but cheer is highly competitive.

I just started cheerleading this year as a freshmen in highschool and I had NO knowledge what so ever in cheerleading. I didn't even no how to do a cartwheel or what a herkie was until try-outs. My coaches helped me a lot and I made JV (we don't have a freshmen team). My advice to you is sign up for gymnastics and take that a while and also go on the internet and look up cheerleading websites, they really help a lot. Also if you don't do any other sports, if I were you I would work-out a bunch prior to try-outs to get you in shape. And strech and try your splits EVERYDAY.

Honestly I did cheerleading all through high school & 2 years in college...I would say learn as much as you can to make it, expecailly since it's so late in the year...A toe touch is a big one, a herkie, a split...or atleast a sit, a pike, learn some tubbling, cartwheels, front roll, round offs, back flips...it's a lot of work. practice being loud w/o sounding like your screaming @ the top of your lung, that's where most people get it wrong...pay attention the the cheers and dance they will teach you...that is also crucial...to making the team even to make JV. Cheerleading is a difficult sport, people think it's not but its just as much hard work and dedication as any other sport.

My son is a professional cheerleader coach with Universal Cheerleaders Association. He is in Australia as I write this teaching. He just got back from China where he trained and judged the Chinese Nat'l teams and prepared them for their 2008 Olympics exhibition. I told you all this to tell you that he started out with NO formal training. He taught himself and then cheered in high school and college. If you have talent and desire you can achieve any goal you set for yourself. go to varsity rock and look for Chase Brett in the master choreographers, you will find his profile. He and his wife are both doing this professionally and making a ton of money while loving their jobs. You never know what you can do until you try.
