Two things happen during labor. First, your cervix, which is like a cartilage (feel the tip of your nose), opens to about 10 cm to allow the baby through (dilation). Your cervix also thins to allow it to open (effaces). So if you're 50% effaced, your cervix is half as thin as it needs to be.
This means you're getting really close! Good luck!!

Effacement is when your cervix begins to shorten and thin in preparation for labor and delivery. In it's non-pregnancy condition and in the first and second trimester plus most of the third trimester, your cervix is long and thick. Your doctor will measure your effacement in % with 0% being not effaced at all (no thinning or shortening) to 100% when your cervix will become part of your uterine wall allowing for your baby to pass through. 50% is good as it means you're 1/2 way there. The contractions you feel are Braxton Hicks contractions and are like practice contractions.

effacing /effacement is how thin the cervix is even without dilating it can get thinner-often happens simultaneously It dilates more readily once its 80-100%effaced or thin like paper
You are "at the starting line" of the labor race(a marathon) and warmed up (the braxton hicks ctx's do that)and ready to go!
Now all you need is regular forceful contractions to get you going

i am pretty sure effaced is when your cervix thins. your cervix has to thin and flatten before the baby comes out. 50 % meens you have made progress towards being in labor. the more effaced you are the closer labor is!!
