Before you clean old coins, get them looked at by a dealer. Some coins lose value from getting cleaned.

As a general rule you should NOT clean your coins if you don't know its value, or if you think it is valuable. Leave them untouched and stored in proper holders. The reason for this is that coin dealers and collectors are interested in purchasing coins in their original condition and natural state of preservation. If you absolutely must clean your coins, then you should clean them with the least harmful method that will give the desired results, or let a professional do it for you.

You can use Texas Pete but be sure and wear gloves. Just dab a little on a cloth and clean your coin then wash with soap and water.

If you clean coins this will de-value them. You won't be able to sell them, if this is what you want to do, as collectors want coins in original condition.

when we clean old coins, we use tooth past, arm in hammer, crest r colgate work the best... if ur trying to get rid of that black crap or that blue stuff, or even shinning them up toothpaste works, plus for even better after scrubing them wiht toothpast soak them in lemon juice and salt.

My uncle uses baking soda or jewelry cleaner to clean his coins. He says not to use coke cause coke can strip them.
