Sometimes, a player who didn't score a goal or assist and had a minus 1 rating (and on the losing team, too) is the third star of a game. How?!?!?

it is determined by how much a player has contributed to the game.maybe he didn't score or was on a line that was scored against but stopped many other plays from happening.

It depends on the team, of course. Sometimes, the radio or television announcers might be designated before the game to pick them. Sometimes a single media member is picked ahead of time.

Some years ago in my city, a collection of media members -- usually the people that knew the game -- got together to vote on the three stars. Most votes won ... although the p.r. guy from the team did count the ballots.

Stats do tend to dominate the selection process, but sometimes little things get noticed in picking a third star. That's how some unlikely candidate can be picked. In a close game, it's good to have someone from the losing team honored.

Well I can't speak for all teams but the three stars in a penguins game is chosen by Phil Bourque (radio analyst). And yes sometimes someone who didn't get a point but made a big defensive effort by blocking a shot or won a fight that turned the momentum around. Hmm in a losing effort probably a blocked shot.

Chose by the home teams sponcering media. Which is why sometimes, even though a team loses, they still get 3 of the stars. When they present the 3 stars at a game, they will annouce the sponcer before.

They are "chosen by the sports media", I'll see if I can get some more detail than that for you.

But remember points and even +/- are not the end-all and be-all. If someone has made some good defensive plays or just hustled in all of his shifts that counts for a lot too.

At one time it was common --maybe even a bit of a tradition-- for the third star to come from the losing team.

Because of the fact they played the best and worked the hardest. Contributed to the play as a whole.

could have played really good defense to stop people from getting near the goal, or if they start a nice play that eventually leads to a goal.
