you would be better off going to them despite the fact that gives them home court advantage. In short, by going to them it will make you look less guilty.
I'm not saying you are; the way they look at is, that a person who is guilty of something isn't going to go down to a police station and have a chat with a couple of detectives.

If the person does not go, they would be arrested and taken in. It is a good idea to go before that stage or they may keep the person in for a night or two.

It is okay to go, especially if you have nothing to hide! Been there too!
However, do not submit to having your photo taken ar anything of the like. They (can and will) use this against you!
I respect the uniform and cops in general. But I also know how sneaky they can be, especially to 'prove' their case. I respect them but do not trust them.
Recommend having a lawyer (I don't trust them either) with you if you do go to see them.
Cover your own butt, no one else will!
