Your question kinda makes me sad, as it seems no single guitarist really stands out from the crowd these days. You have guys like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani in Rock, Clapton and Ry Cooder in the Blues, Brent Rowan, Albert Lee and Brad Paisley in Country, but God, I miss Stevie Ray Vaughan!! Don't think the world will ever see another of his kind, as a guitarist OR a live performer, he always gave everything he had, and got lost in his music!!
