In the Bible, adultery is described as when a man even looks at another woman with bad thoughts. In law it to have sexual intercourse with another when married. So cheating in any relationship could fall under either one depending on whose definition you use

Adultery implies marriage, or at least a lifetime commitment sealed by a vow of fidelity. Boyfriends and girlfriends can't commit adultery because they haven't promised to be exclusively someone else's partner forever. But a BF/GF of five years could have a marriage-like commitment to each other such that cheating could be almost adultery. The feeling matters more than the precise word.

My definition of adultery would be cheating on a spouse, not a girlfriend or boyfriend. However you did not say weather this couple lived together or not. If they do he may consider that they are common law husband and wife. Then he could call it adultery.

Dating for five years, definitely not. Living together for five years, yes. Nevertheless, five years of anything is a long time and if the guy has been spending a lot on this girlfriend and has sacrificed opportunities for the sake of the relationship and family and friends acknowledge them as a couple, it all entails commitment, but no matter what, if they lived at their respective homes, I would still not call it adultery but I would admit that it hurt as much as adultery.

Adultry is usually the term used used for married couples. Although many couples do not marry legally and are married in their hearts. Which means they don't make it official by a piece of paper. But cheating is cheating no matter what label you dress it up in.

Boyfriend/girlfriend, not adultery, because you're technically not in a committed relationship like marriage.
If you agreed to see each other exclusively, the "cheating" person is guilty of dishonesty. Or you can just call it cheating...I just wouldn't call it adultery.

i think if you're in a committed, exclusive relationship, cheating can certainly be called "adultery". many people have very committed relationships but never decide to marry. cheating is cheating, regardless of the words used to describe the act.

No when you are dating that is not considered adultery I think the correct term or terms would be cheating and unfaithful and even fornication. I do not consider it adulterous if they are not married.
