The satellite collects data from various wave lengths of energy. The image is made of visible light and also infra-red, ultra-violet and other wave lengths that we can't see as "light"

The image is turned to a digital collection of data, compressed and transmitted in that form. Since a lot of satellites use CCD cameras, the is no scanned image like an analog TV signal. It goes right to digital numbers.
