Sterotype is something that is assumed that you do like girls like shopping and boys like sports.
Prejudice is when you are racist or favor another person over another because of either ethinic racism, or you just don't like how they look. Like some people are prejudice against black people and hispanics because of what they look like and their religious/ ethinc beliefs

Difference Between Stereotype And Prejudice

2016-11-02 00:54:00 · answer #2 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

Racism is the belief that one particular race is inferior or superior to other races. Discrimination is the act of making distinction between two or more things. Often used in the sense that people discriminate based on race and due to that discrimination treat them differently. A prejudice is a pre-conceived notion of something. If you make any decisions or judgments before meeting a person you are being prejudice. Often it is used to describe someone who is prejudice against a certain race and has pre-decided that they are bad/ignorant/lazy without even meeting the person, but just based on race. And a stereotype is a simplified conception of how someone should act. It's a generalized conception used to describe an entire race, religion, creed, etc. For ex: All black people like watermelon. Although this may not be true for all of them, it is a general stereotype.

A stereotype is a generalization of a certain ethnicity. The past answers are correct in their reason, such as the Irish people drink or that the Italians belong to the mob. These may be true for some people, but for the majority they are not correct.

A prejudice is disliking a group after you learn about the stereotypes. Since, like stated above, stereotypes do not include everyone of that group, a prejudiced person may think so. For example, put into today's society news, definitely not all Arabians are boomers like on 9/11, yet many people are still prejudiced against the group, even after knowing the stereotypes.

(People don't seem to realize that the boomers of 9/11 were not un-educated people, quite the opposite, the majority came from well off middle class families.)

racism=believing another person's race is inferior to yours. For example, some white people believe their race is more superior than the black race. discrimination=keeping something away from someone, keeping someone out of an organization, etc. all because of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation or whatever idiot reason to keep someone from getting something. prejudice=judging someone for whatever reason before you get to know them. When some folks run across people of other another race, they automatically assume the worse before they get to know the person. stereotype=this is when certain myths are given to a particular group. A popular stereotype is that all Italian-Americans are in the Mob. You can thank the Sopranos for contributing to this. This is just not true. Being Italian does not automatically make someone a member of whatever popular crime family. Also, there's the one about black people being violent. The ones you see on the evening news are those that live in economically depressed areas. Violent crime has been in the ghettos every since the first immigrants began coming to America. The movie Gangs of New York is an example of this.

I can't give you four or five differences but I do know that stereotypes are from society on the whole and prejudices are from individuals. In history, stereotypes have proven to be less destructive than prejudice.

With a stereotype a common assumption is made about an entire race or group either positive or negative. A prejudice is dislike for a person because of their group or race.

Stereotyping is categorizing in your mind a group of people, which may not include negativity. Prejudice is a negative mindset, a prejudgment, or a dislike for a person or group of people. I think the main difference is in the negativity which is not always included in stereotyping.
