I'm 26 weeks now and getting nervous about the upcoming event, I would ask my doctor but my next appointment is not for 4 weeks, I forgot to ask yesterday! I will be having (or should be)my second c-section delivery, Its been 9 years since my last and I dont know how long I'll be in the hospital. I was in for 5 days last time but that seems so excessive to me, what is the standard stay these days? What is the standard stay for regular delivery? I could still have him regular if he comes before 38 weeks, so Im getting nervous and want to know what kind of time to plan on. Thanks!

Discharge policies may vary with your hospital, but at mine a mother who has had an uncomplicated pregnancy, labor and delivery will be discharged anytime between 24 and 48 hours after birth. Mothers and babies are allowed to be discharged sooner (6-12 hours after delivery) if they really want to, they meet certain criteria, and the doctor says it's okay. Discharge after a cesarean birth is usually 2 to 4 days, depending on your recovery. Congrats and good luck!

1) the epidural is a needle that is small enough to fit between your lower back vertebrae. They will make you lean forward to create some space between the vertebrae. Not much pain, just discomfort for few seconds. 4 to 7) you can't feel a thing, remember you'll have the epidural, that's the beauty of it:) 8) no stitching in the back, it's a needle you got for the epidural. 9) when you feel like it. 10) yes you can walk few hours after, but it will hurt like heck. So do the shuffle, and small steps. 11) yes, the nurse will bring baby to you, then you're on your own, but ask dad to help lifting baby. 12) relax. Get family and friends to help for caring for baby i.e diaper change, bathing, etc. You'll be tiered, so don't be afraid to ask for help. - Get some baby bottles and a breast pump (manual is okay) so you can prepare some breast milk in advance. Keep in the fridge for dad to use when you're resting and baby is hungry. -Amazing enough, nature built women with special hormones and brain chemicals (my wording here) so that all the pain experienced during child birth is forgotten and erased from your memory. You can remember the pain of a cut finger, but can't remember child birth. My delivery was awfull with excruciating pain for 14 hours before I got the epidural and an emergency c-section. I CAN'T remember the pain! , just that I was in pain. So don't worry about the pain, you"ll have a beautiful baby and be amaze of what you have created. Good luck!

It sounds like maybe you'd prefer a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) but for some reason you only have that option up to 38 weeks. There may be no medical reason that you have to have a 2nd cesarean if you'd prefer vaginal, which typically comes with a shorter hospital stay and a quicker recovery. visit ican-online.org or vbac.com for more info on VBAC. The most important determinant of whether you will have a successful VBAC is having a supportive doctor or midwife. Ask a lot of questions and remember it's never too late to switch, if you'd prefer to avoid surgery.

I've known women to leave the hospital 48 hours after a cesarean.

For 2 of my vaginal deliveries I was only in the hospital for 1 day. With my 3rd vaginal delivery I was in the hospital for 2 days due to preeclampsia and being on magnesium. I don't know about a c-section but this is what happened with me. Hope this helps some.

For regular delivery...I was in and out in less than 2 days. As long as you and the baby are doing fine and no problems have shown up then they generally let you go in about 48 hours now. For a c section I don't know

The military hospital I go to keeps you for 2 days with natural birth and 3 days for a c section. But I think it all depends on the hospital and if you have any complications.

Awww don't be nervous. No, I think the standard c is still 5 days, the vaginal delivery is only 3..meaning you check out on the 3rd day. Good luck and health to you and your little one!

I had a c-section in December. My daughter was born Tuesday morning and I went home Friday afternoon. I had no complications. The doc said 4-5 days is normal.
