As several have said, stealth, quickness, a flashlight and wet ground will work but that's old school. "William" however opened up a whole new can of worms - ELECTRICITY!!! I use a device I made from a pointed brass rod and an insulated handle. I made two electric cords, one uses the hot wire from a standard 115 volt outlet. The other is a high voltage wire attached to the distributor cap of a running vehicle. The vehicle needs to be grounded with another rod pushed into the soil. I use the 115 volt rig in my garden and lawn and the high voltage one camping. By probing around in cool damp shady places, you can get worms and night-crawlers to almost jump out of the ground. A fishing buddy claims he can do the same with a "taser" but I haven't seen it work.

What backhome is talking about is called fiddling for worms. Yes..I've heard that too. But you can also go do some digging in the ground somewhere. Maybe you have some woods close by, go do some digging under some leaves, or they maybe already just sitting underneath without having to dig. Any place wet and damp and shady.

This may sound funny but it works. Take a broom handle and tap it on the ground for about ten minutes, The worm are sensitive to vibration and they think it is rain hitting the ground. Some soils are better than others, but try it - it works.

Get two metal rods about 3 feet long and an old extension cord about ten feet or so. Strip the female end of the cord and separate the wires. wrap one wire around each rod after you drive them in the ground. Plug in the cord and watch them come up!

Wait for a good rain and scout them out before the birds do. either that or flood your lawn with a lawn sprinkler, but it may be cheaper to just buy some night crawlers from a bait shop.

YOU HAVE TO DIG THEM UP. BUT TO MAKE A GOOD WORM BED MAKE A BOX OR USE ANY KIND OF CONTAINER THAT DOESN'T DRAIN, PUT A GOOD MIXTURE OF SOIL AND COMPOST MAT. WITH SOME COFFEE GROUNDS AND KEEP IT MOIST. SOON YOU WILL NEVER HAVE TO BUY WORMS AGAIN. JUST DIG.

night crawlers come out at ....night . walk very slow across a untreated lawn with a flashlight .you can spot them between clumps of grass , you gotta be fast . they try to escape back down their hole , so pull them out slowly . or start a basement worm breeding compost pile with red wigglers (best for indoor composting) and get rid of kitchen scraps too.

I heard you could put electric current in the ground and that will make them come up. I don't know if its true. I'm not brave enough to try.
