Besides the loss of about two thousand lives this explosion in 1917 seriously set back the war effort because it was the loss of a large ammunition ship. The city itself, Halifax in Canada was also devastate as a port city and would not recover for decades to come. The infrastructure and also the labor force in this key port city was devastated. Shipments of critical supplies to Europe from this port were over for the remainder of World War I and also into the 1920s, causing its own local depression, joblessness and suffering.
