You can't get a fairy godmother to give you a dress and a carage if you want to go to your ball (or your prom)
When you bite in to a poison apple(or a tough time in life), you don't fall into a deep sleep and have a prince kiss you and live happily ever after.
Everything that happens in life, happens for a reason. And fairytales tell of this perfect world where every bad thing that happens just gets prepared my magic. I can't happen in real life. And that just make you a little depressed. Because when things get hard, happiness ISN'T just a tear drop away.

ask the question "are there any free lunches?' and Santa Clause is dead are some of the beliefs from just the plain grass-roots folks of America that know life is difficult and once realizing this is true then life becomes easier because they don't expect life to be like in a fairy tale. Believing in fairy tales is very harmful and in no way prepares one for the journey of the difficult road that life will surely take them on /along with joys and sorrows.

Do your own homework. Most fairytales were made to control children's behaviour through fear - Don't wander off in the woods, Beware of wolves (many at the time in Europe had rabies), watch out for "mythical creature", if you behave well, good things will happen, don't talk to strangers.
Also, most fairy tales are not as we know them today; most are quite scary.
Nursery Rhymes on the other hand, many are rooted in the truth.

Like a couple of the answers above said, fairy tales were meant to teach morals and have been changed to make them more agreeable to audiences. Maybe you should look into the original stories before denouncing all of them.

Wow, I think you are really over thinking this. Fairy tales were just allegorical stories to teach children morals, much like biblical stories. The Little Mermaid ended with her killing herself out of misery to teach kids to be happy with their "station" in life.

ONE IDEA WOULD BE TO POINT OUT HOW THE DESCRIPTION OF A UNICORN MAKES LIFE SADDER AS NO ANIMALS THAT LOOK LIKE A HORSE WITH A HORN EXIST AND SO CAN NOT HEAL ANYONE WITH THEIR HORNS AND SADDER STILL IN AFRICA THERE YOU HAVE THE RHINOCEROS AS CLOSE AS YOU WILL GET TO A UNICORN AND IT DOES NOT HAVE ANY HEALING POWERS IN IT'S HORN EITHER
