The United States took the position of protector of Japan at the end of World War II, Japan has no standing army or armed forces at all as outlined in the US mandated Japanese Constitution. Japan was a base of supply and reinforcement for the Korean War, a job that it was very conveniently suited for by geographical proximity. In some ways the Korean War can be linked to Japan as a way to prevent the spread of communism to the Japanese homeland.

The reason you are having a tough time is because Japan had almost no role at all, beyond being a staging area for the UN and US troops. After WW II the military in Japan was severely restricted and they had almost not ability to attack or defend themselves. Hence, they played almost no role at all.
