I want to become a fashion designer , And was planning on going to a fashion college instead of a regular one, but yesterday, my dad telling me it is better to go to a regular one because you can have a backup plan, and can study management too. i AM CONFUSED! I have 3 questions:

1) can you study management (for starting a company) at a fashion college too?
2) is it better to go to regular college and have a backup plan in case you don't become a fashion designer?
3) can you go to a regular college, THEN a fashion one, or would it take too long?

If all you want to do is be a designer, just go to fashion school - it's cheaper, shorter, and you won't be taking a bunch of classes that you don't want to take.

Your dad is looking out for you in the way that you will *probably* change your mind after you get going for awhile.

But if you're really *set* on fashion design, just go to that program. It will save him money anyhow.

If you have doubts or aren't *positively sure* that this is what you want to do, go to regular college and take courses that will help you in fashion design and management. I doubt you can take management courses at a fashion school -- and if you can, there's no way they're nearly as good as a regular college's management courses -- so, like i said, if you have doubts about fashion design or have ANY other interests, go to a regular college...

i guess i'd urge what your dad urges, only because unless you're absolutely sure about fashion design, you will end up a day late and a dollar short when you decide that you want to go to a regular college.

1) I think some fashion colleges might offer some fashion/business courses. They are all different, so find some scholls that you are interested in and see what courses they have to offer on their website.

2) It is always a good idea to keep other options just incase. But, if this is your passion, you have to give it all you got. I would take other courses (that can pertain to fashion in some way) and that way you will have a wide range of experience. You might find you like some other area of interest more.

3) You can go to a regular college and then go to a fashion school. It might take a little longer, but that doesn't matter. Money is the only issue that really is a problem, I think. I know some regular schools that offer fashion type majors (www.immaculata.edu) for starters. I think this would be a good option because these are liberal arts schools- so you have your fashion major and you get some experience in others subjects (sciences, English, etc.) All important for a well-rounded education.

You can get management classes at a fashion colleges, but they won't count if you try to get a job in another industry. There are a number of regular colleges with fashion programs in them; you might want to look at some of these as an alternative (and probably a better one) than a pure fashion college.

1) You'd have to ask.
2) Backup plans are ALWAYS a good idea. This is why picking a field of study that is flexible is important. Especially in a competitive field such as design. Also, going to a four year university gives your degree a bit more credibility than a trade school. An MIT degree is "worth more" than one from ITT tech.
3) You could, but would it be worth it? Why would you need to do both? Could you afford it? This is something you should talk to your guidance counselor about.

There is a joke in colleges, and it goes like this "I go to business school, that means I don't know what I want to do"
You know what you want to do. If you truly want to be a fashion designer, dammit, go to fashion design school. Your dad is being a dad. He wants you to go the "safe" route and get a solid education. He knows the likelyhood of you becoming the next Donna Karen or Tommy Hillfiger is like one in a million. Think about this, if you go to the University of Whatever business school, they aren't going to have Embroidering 101 as an elective. You just need to decide what you want to do and go for it. If you're not 100% sure you want to be a fashion designer for the rest of your life, don't waste your time/money in fashion design school.
