Often the store left holding the bad check will press charges. An arrest warrant will be issued for you for passing bad checks or for fraud. Not a good way to live. THey may or may not come looking for you with an outstanding warrant...but if you get pulled over for a traffic violation, you are getting hauled downtown.

Pay the check...pay the fees and get on with your life. I would recommend destroying your checkbook and using cash only. If this is even a question for you then you have no business writing people checks.

"Hot Checks" are considered a crime in most areas. You could end up in jail. Write a big enough one and it is a felony.

Just to add to the other posts, they can also go to court and get a judgement against you and your wages for the cost of the check, court fees to file the case against you, recovery fees to file the garnishment against you, and then the filing fee to have someone come to your place of work to serve the wage garnishment to your payroll person.
