but if someone tells you there's wet paint somewhere, you have to touch it to make sure?

This is a fun question it made me laugh. We believe the astronomers are making a guess so we believe them and we can't physically touch the stars and can't mentally handle the idea of counting over a million stars so we just let it be. However, someone puts a sign on a bench wet paint we wonder hmm how long ago did they put this sign on this bench is it still wet maybe they just haven't gotten back to it yet so we casually touch it see yep still wet guess they were right but because most of us aren't really ready to tangibly count the stars we take there word for it, but would be accepting if maybe they might still be learning. We might not ever learn the truth about the universe and we probably will still be touching wet benches just to make sure. Have a great evening.

This is an epistimelogical question. When someone tells us there is a million stars in the Universe, it is a claim that we cannot immediately debunk by virtue of our perceptions or reason - given that the person making such a claim has a known background in astronomy of some sort.

When someone tells you there is wet paint on a wall, you can immediately confirm this claim by virtue of your perception - e.g. by touching it - therefore when we can confirm the veracity of a given claim by the simple means of our perception we will go ahead and do it. However, when a claim must be debunked by virtue of reason, e.g. counting the stars in the universe, we will find ourselves unable to perceptually determine the veracity and consequently seek training in astronomy or take the argument as true or false without any reason for doing so.

There are more stars in the cosmos than there are grains of sand on earth.
When I think of this I look up.
When I'm told paint is wet, I leave it alone.

Because paint dries eventually, you touch it to make sure.

It would be too time consuming to count each individual star, though you may do so if you like.

It's a lot easier than counting all of those stars.
