1. A Ford TSB (04-11-1) includes streamlined diagnostics for the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve codes. The Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) sensors on these vehicles have a high failure rate. Ford now uses a redesigned DPFE sensor. In effect, since the failure rate is so high, if you get this code, replace the sensor and retest.

2. The vehicle may exhibit a MIL "on" condition with or without the following symptoms: Rough Running, Lack of Power, Surge or Poor Fuel Economy. It may also set Codes P0401, P0402, P1400 and P1401. These codes may be caused by an intermittently problem in the tube-mounted delta pressure feedback EGR (DPFE) sensor.

3. Retrieve the Continuous Codes. If Codes P0401, P0402, P1400 or P1401 are set, replace the DPFE sensor (key off).

4. Clear the Continuous codes.
Perform the KOEO and KOER self tests to verify the repair.

Potential Causes: Defective DPFE sensor

Tech Tips: Ford TSB 04-11-1 contains information for this application on how to replace the DPFE sensor with a new part number (4U7Z-9J460-AA).

this might sound crazy to you, but is there a possibility that you crossed the wires when you installed them...smelling gas means it is not being ignited when it should, and always possible to get a bad coil..maving a misfire will cause the dpfe, and egr valve to not work properly, and also the o2sensors...recheck the plugs, wires and coil...you could also have a bad injector, or fuel pressure regulator...email me if you need more information

Actually, the more you write about this, the more it looks like your catalytic converter is getting plugged up...slows down while driving, some misfire, gas smells...

I'd have some shop check back pressure up stream of the converter...
