Radar detectors are, in my opinion nearly pointless, they detect the beam of a radar gun, and police rarely "shoot" them beam unless they already have you estimated over the speed limit. Once they "shoot" you with the radar gun, the detector will respond, but at taht point it's too late, because the info is already on it's way back to the gun, and you won't have the time to slow down.

I agree with the above police officer poster. That is if they are targeting you. A radar detector will go off if a beam is detected in the area. Most good modles can detect beams being shot miles away and give you enough warning to slow down. Be sure to get one that detects all of the frequencies and types of guns police use today, inlcuding the K band and laser. Stay away from detectors that jam the radar signal, these work but are illegal in most states and it's a pretty serious deal if you're caught with one.
On the other side many models out there now support traffic and contstruction warnings, as well as the ability to pick up on emergency vehicles in the area. I have one solely for this purpose.
Don't think a radar detector will work %100 of the time. the actual device may work but if you can see the officer, or more importantly the officer can see you, it's too late.

The escort is a good model. I really like the Valentine One. This one will show you the number of radars and the direction from where they are coming from. This helps if there are two in a row, you get past the first and think you are clear and then the second one gets you. So that one is my favorite.
The detectors won't do you much good with the laser guns. I know when they hit you, the radar screams as loud as it can, but it's too late. They got you already and there is no time ot slow down.
