I have this obsession on looking at emails, and myspace and just chatting to people on msn. I know it is really bad but it seems to be an obsession and has been like this for some time. It's mainly out of boredom but at the same time I wish I could think of more useful things to fill up my spare time. I sometimes spend hours and hours practically looking at these things without actually doing much. I just can't seem to stop though

Turn the computer for a week and make a list of other things you can do to preoccupy your time like reading, outdoor activities or spending time with friends. Then set a limit of how much time a week you will spend on the computer.

Go to the library, and let yourself wander to the section of books with the topic that interests you the most. You can sit there all day and read, and no one will think anything of it. You can also take the books home with you, and return them when you've finished reading them. I find it very easy to loose all track of time at the library, and I'm still being productive. Take a book you've borrowed and go sit somewhere and read. Just get away from your computer, you'll find that you will use it as it becomes necessary. If that doesn't help you, then you really should seek assistance for obsessive behaviour, because it seems like you may start neglecting your responsibilities and end up in a bad way. Good luck to you.

If its not affecting your work or family life then dont worry about it.

I.ve only recently got a laptop and I spend about 8 hours a day on it doing this and things like it. My family life's better than ever because I now keep in touch with everyone.

The alternative for me is to go out drinking/playing the fruit machine which costs more and is worse for your health. What did you do before spending so much time on the computer?

Seriously though if you're not neglecting your work, family or friends don't worry about it.

It's a registered obsession and you're right to be concerned. Not much I can suggest outside other activities to use up your time, but to that end my website will t leastprovide you with reading material - www.paulseaton.net if you're into reading.

Some great websites are :-
www.hsx.com
www.addictinggames.com
or
www.facebook.com

I don't think you should worry unduly, you're aware its a problem, and unlikely to prolong it. Know the limits and take control of how much time you spend doing things you don't find profitable and/or enjoyable.

Best wishes

Paul

Sometimes the internet can be like a safer world than the real one. People can't really hurt you and you can "hide" in a way, you know? Try disciplining yourself and giving only a set amount of time to internet stuff. Read a book, learn to play an instrument, find different ways to help/improve things around the house. There are so many options! I used to live in the prairies with NOTHING around me, but there was always something to do. Don't try and hide yourself, but learn to deal with real people in real ways, because the longer you hide, the harder it gets to step out there. Take it from somebody who knows...

It's not really and obsession, it's a habit. It's not even that bad of one, most people do that, I know I do. Just find something you'd rather do and do that, otherwise there is no reason not to be on the computer all the time.

Get off the chair and go outside. Window shop, take a ride, do some photography--keep moving. Discipline yourself to spend only so much time at the computer.

If possible you must look for a job either paid or a social service kind of thing to fill up your time. There are millions of people like you and you need not worry too much about it.

i think its a good way to pass time and a great way to communicate to different people from all walks of life. without realising you are gaining oppinions, thought and ideas on the different things you talk about or read. If you enjoy it why stop, think of it as more of a hobby
