First it is a polygraph NOT a lie detector. The machine records certain physiological responses. The examiner INTERPRETS the readings and HIS OWN observation of the subject to determine if the subject is lying. Nervousness does affect the readings recorded by the polygraph. The 'control questions' are supposed to establish a baseline to which the 'examination questions' are compared. Both being very nervous and being extremely calm will result in 'inconclusive' results.

They take all of that into consideration. Before the test is given they determine the best questions to give you which you both must agree on. Then they take all of the readings from sweat, heartbeat, muscle tensions and basic common sense. They most likely will have you on film with other people watching in another room. They try to make you feel as comfortable as possible. The test usually takes about seven hours and you cannot get away with lying. It is all computerized and administered by professionals. It is voluntary and you are not obligated to take one. If you didnt do a crime and you dont want to go through the court system I would suggest taking one. Only a guilty coward would not. Make sure you understand all the questions they give you. They also ask you sets of questions just to see how your body language is when you are truthful. They take everything into consideration. They dont want to take an innocent person all the way through the court system especially when the real criminal is still free if you didnt commit the crime. After the test they will either tell you you passed or they will take you away in handcuffs and arrainge all the charges. I strongly advise if you are innocent you voluntarily take this test. You should be represented by an attorney but dont have to have one. They read you all your rights and advise you that is strictly voluntary and you can ask them to quit asking questions at any time. Polygraphs are 99.9% accurate.

A Lie Detector test has no scientific basis, the man who created it for the CIA believed that plants can read your mind. You will most likely take the test 3 times. It is possible to get away with a lie, you just have to get yourself to believe the lie. I have a friend that lied about his gender and was undetected.
