Marx used social class to describe how the "bourgeoisie" (property owners) kept the "proletariat" (workers) from equal rights, privileges, and capital.
He saw the property owners taking advantage of the workers in every way: oppressive loans, religions that kept them from rising up, poor pay, and so on. Basically he saw capitalism as the system that made the rich richer and the poor poorer.

He needed an enemy in order to stir up emotions. In his case he chose the concept of "class"- in a way reflecting the same method uses during the French Revolution. Since in Marx's time there was almost no aristocracy, then the next level- property owners- would have to do.
His method is exactly the same as Hitlers- except Hitler chose "Jews" (racial group as opposed to ownership status)as the "favoured enemy" for the purpose of stirring emotions.

When you create a class, you can stereotype them and assign values to them and even go as far as to assign the looks, mannerisms, etc.
