if you bought it brand-new in a box, it should explicitly say that in the box. if not, check the manual. if you don't have the manual. look for the make and model of the video card and go to the website of the manufacturer, that should give you the information that you need.

i find that the easiest way to identify the style of slot is just to look
this is because some video cards are made with different slots, but no name change
just open the side panel, and look in
here are the different slots that accept video cards:
PCI: white, about 3 inches long. you should have a bunch of these. if you have a company-made pc (dell gateway, etc) there may not be many. should also have sound card/modem/ethernet card/whatever else plugged into it)
AGP: usually brown, tho different colors out there, and about and inch farther back from the edge of the motherboard than the PCIs. you will only have one, if any. always above the PCIs, but not there if you have PCI-E.
PCI-E:about 4 inches long, usually black, tho different colors available. these are fairly new (last 1-2 years, maybe 3). could have up to 2, tho not uncommon to have 1
so just look in there and see for yourself

Hi. The AGP slot is different from your other slots and will be set back a bit. Usually closest to the CPU.

if your system was NOT a custom built system check out the specifications on the manufacturers site. If that doesn't provide you with information, a visual inspection can sometimes let you know (recommended that you have a tech savy friend look for you).

The slot is unique. If your PC has one, it will be different from any of the other slots and there will be a graphics card in it.
