WI-FI is wireless internet connectivity. it allows you to connect to the internet with a laptop, blackberry, PSP, palmpilot, etc... in order to connect to the internet via a WI-FI connection however, you need a wireless router, or a WI-FI "hotspot".

it's short for "wireless fidelity"

as "hi-fi" is short for high-fidelity

fidelity is a way of describing the quality of a signal, the 'density' of a signal - (as well as the quality of a marriage ;;)))

hi-fi usually referred to an audio signal: i.e. a "hi-fi" stereo, or record player

wi-fi usually referrs to a way of transmitting data wirelessly - yet still maintaining a signal's fidelity, or quality

wireless modems for instance are "wi-fi" - or "free wi-fi" usually means you can bring your laptop computer into a cafe or starbucks that has "wi-fi" accessible for instance, and get a wireless internet signal being broadcast from that location

it's mostly a play off of the term "hi-fi" so it sounds familiar to people rather than saying
"starbucks offers a high-bandwidth and baud rate wireless signal for use with a wireless modem"
instead they say
"starbucks has wi-fi"

basically that's it
