UNIX is older and often proprietary while Linux is more open source (although you will find that in some ways it can still be locked in other ways). If you learn on either platform, I think you will generally be OK to move around between them. There will of course be differences, but that happens even between UNIX varieties (Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, IRIX, BSD, etc...) and the numerous Linux versions (RedHat, Suse, Debian, Ubuntu, etc...).

I tend to go with Solaris (UNIX) but that is primarily due to a comfort level working on server systems. Solaris is also used on the desktop (no real differentiation between server and client other than a few add on applications) and works quite well on x86 (Solaris x86).

With either Linux or UNIX you will need to watch your hardware to ensure drivers are available. I've experienced problems (generally solved by a few searches on Google) with video and network hardware but if you have fairly main streem equipment, you shouldn't have any major issues with either platform.

As for which is best, all you will really get are opinions here. I'll throw in for UNIX if you are taking votes.

Oh, almost forgot about the "locking" of Linux. Basically what you find is that there are companies like Red Hat that provide support contracts as part of a purchase of Red Hat Linux. They also produce Fedora Core which you can get for free but it doesn't have the sophisticated patching mechanism you would get with Red Hat.

To download Solaris, check the first link below. To get the source, you can also visit OpenSolaris (Sun released its code to the public). If you only intend to run Solaris, I'd go for the Sun download page.

Personal choice. I like Linux better for a personal computer, as far as I know, Unix is for servers....

Go to distrowatch.org and read up.

*edit* My vote would be for Ubuntu....it is privately funded by a multimillionaire from South Africa to be a completely free OS that still has massive development and support. It's the most famous, in terms of use of all Linux's.

very own decision in maximum circumstances, I quite have examine lots of expert Linux, project is which Linux? Mac? a minimum of with residing house windows and Linux you could chop and alter, they the two help an identical ecosystem. in case you have residing house windows put in you could eliminate it and run Linux in case you like and Viceversa, or twin boot. the concept Linux is guard and mal-ware loose (virus, spyware) is authentic to a definite quantity, regrettably the extra those that have that's going to bring about extra human beings working as root and any malicious code they run has that privilege. that's residing house windows project, new customers are directors by default, something they do has administrative privileges and an infection is all too ordinary. That being reported, residing house windows is comparatively ordinary, that's in all probability the laptop you employ at paintings and there is consequently no discovering curve, help on line is likewise ordinary to come again by, with maximum of customers that's no longer likely you are the 1st to experience a definite project. There are emulators for residing house windows so which you will run Mac OS, set up the digital computer and set up Linux, do a seek on emulators and there are numerous. i like residing house windows and Linux, on the 2d laptop proportion is gained by Microsoft, and Servers are Linux. as long as you replace protection application (Linux and Mac as properly - you could desire to maintain patching the kernel as they alter into available for Linux) and make sound judgements approximately what you do on line then your experience would be very almost equivalent in spite of gadget you employ. on the subject of application innovations, each and each has countless comparable possibilities and that i could locate it stunning that known application does no longer be available for residing house windows - in ordinary terms for Linux. Linux and Mac customers are very vocal approximately 'residing house windows bashing', residing house windows is a great objective - yet i like it. Linux runs on very almost no longer something, yet some variations may be source hungry as quickly as you load Gui's and extra centers. Vista is a hungry just to load, yet with adequate aspects (maximum new computers are quite equipped) runs properly. Mac? No concept - never used it.
