Sure. There are emergency landing fields in Europe, California, New Mexico, and I *believe* in Australia, but I'm not sure about that one... mainly in case of an emergency on launch, if it can't return to the Florida coast, it'll try to land over in Spain at it's designated emergency field. So far, it's never been used.

Yes, is true. The shuttle can't land just anywhere (except for a crash-landing). There are places selected that have long runways and special equipment to take care of the shuttle. The USA has paid money to these places for them to be ready.

Here is a list: Morocco, Gambia, Spain, Australia, Cape Berde, Sweden, Turkey, Canary Islands, French Polynesia, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Zaire, Germany, Azores, Bahamas, Crete, Diego Garcia, United Kingdom, Liberia, Algeria, Guam.

Actually, I think it can. It can land in any number of places in a dire emergency, they can direct it many places. It'd be risky, though. And.....it could land on any number of runways, but it would burn up the brakes and skid off the end because it needs a really long runway. It'd definitely be a crash landing. But.....if there were no other options, they would have no choice but to try.

NASA does have its own runway in Spain if needed. Go to the NASA site and look at the shuttle details for more
