I plagiarized on a report in school. It is my first offense, and I was never in any type of other trouble while in college. What will they take into consideration? What should I say in my defense? What strategies should I use to defend myself?

I committed plagiarism. It was my first offense since I've been in college. I've never been in trouble before, and I don't know what to expect from this. It's not really a jury. It's a student conduct board, which consists of 5 teachers and 2 students. I was told that the students judge the hardest. The punishments are receiving a zero for the work, an "F" for the course, suspension, or worse, expulsion. How do I defend myself, and what are your opinions about what the board will take into consideration? What should I say to them?

Honesty. Admit what you did, and then apologize profusely. Tell them you learned your lesson (I hope you did), and that you think you deserve a second chance, as you've never done it before and will never do it again (and keep your word).

I went in front of a judge way back when I was 18. I told the judge, "Yes, Your Honor, I did it. I'm guilty." He looked like he was in shock. I received a minor fine which I was able to pay out in very small payments when I told him I didn't have much money. So be honest, then ask for mercy.

If I am the jury and you want my sympathy, DON'T defend yourself. Admit what you did and ask for mercy.

Just be honest. Don't try to get sympathy, you likely won't get any.

If you are remorseful, show it.

And don't cheat anymore.

Plead guilty.
You did the crime...do your time.

You should be blatantly honest, but you should cry while you're doing it.
