At least in Italy this is a past old tradition, nowadays no longer followed in the largest part of the Country, and it has nothing to do with the Catholic religion. It's still surviving in a few places of Italy (mostly in the south side) and it's that you shouldn't wear any other color out of the black for 6 months or a whole year (depending on the region) after yr relative's death. This was exclusive to women while men were wearing a black band at their arms, in latest times replaced by a small black stripe or a black button sewn on the coats.
I guess however you have better ways to respect yr grandfather's memory either by deepling thinking of him or praying for his soul if you're religious.

I'm from northern Italy and we don't have any rule for colours, we wear what we want and for sure we don't wear black dresses for months, we just wear this colour the day of the funeral.
