It all depends on what you want done. A good petroleum geologist might stink as a mineralogist. A good paleontologist might not know beans about geophysics. A good planetary geologist doesn't help you if you are mapping out lacustrine deposits. After you decide what you want him/her to do then inquire who might fit the bill with The American Geological Society.

Know a few, but depends on speciality you need. I'm an environmental geologist, formerly a hydrogeologist, with advanced degree focussing on sedimentology, microfossils, and computer applications.
