actually you cant keep them all, if that's what you wanted
instinctively, our brain makes the choices by itself.
what matters is, you make these memories your own.
relish every moment, seize each day for they could happen
only once...
you might not be able to keep these mementos forever,
but they will be deep inside your being though forgotten.

The journal idea is a good one.

Also, your brain has a better chance of remembering an event if you keep thinking about it. Imagine that your brain is like a sandy beach. When you remember something, it's like a stick making a long groove in the sand. The more you run the stick over that groove in the sand (the more you think about the memory), the deeper and more permanent the groove gets. If you stop making that groove for a long time, eventually the ocean's tide will erase the groove. I use this memory technique and I have a very good memory.

P.S. My mother is 53 and remembers back to age 1 1/2. She constantly tells stories from her childhood, which helps her retain the information the older she gets.

Your brain is a lot like a forest of trees continually growing upward toward the sun. Those branches which recieve a lot of light become stronger and grow many leaves and fruits, while those which recieve little are soon squeezed out by other, stronger branches, and eventually wither away and are gone.

So it goes for ANY mental faculty you have, including specific memories. If you want to retain them, you MUST use them. Each use strengthens and builds the neural network that creates that function. Those you never use are eventually lost to other things.

If you wish to retain specific memories, therefore, it is critical that you spend time remembering every detail you wish to retain. If you wish to retain ANY skill you must likewise practice it. It is no accident that some people who are in a rut of narrow brain activity end up losing the ability to do anything else after a few decades.

Exercise your mind, or lose it.

Daily exercise. It keeps the blood flowing better, the chemicals UP in your brain. I am 54, almost 55, and I can remember - in DETAIL - many memories back to when I was 7 years old.

I write them down. But I prefer to let the bad memories slip away. I don't need them, unless they hold some valuable lessons for me. Good memories? I think about them from time to time, and they still can make me smile =)

Invest in a good diary and write them down, this way you will never forget.
You can also take pictures. Pictures are a good way to remeber.
Just bring a camera wherever you go and you will never miss a fun day and therefore never forget that day.

for me.. its weird.
I go by a smell or image. Like lets say I got my first kiss or something right? And this guy smells really good. Evrytime that i smell something that smelled like him, or close enough to that smell im instantly reminded.
Its completly random and weird (yes, yes i know) but thats how my memories stay...
