Abraham Lincoln was the president at the time for the Union, but Ulysses S. Grant was a general for the Union who played a major role and later became president.

This is a tricky question......I will List three presidents and give a brief reason why atleast they helped to guide us through the Civil War of the U.S.

*15th President of the U.S. President James Buchanan(March 4,1857-March 4, 1861): The reason I have him listed is because southern states started to leave the union under his presidnency...atleast 7 left by Janurary of 1861. Shots were fired upon U.S. Naval vessels under his presidency, but he chose not to retaliate.....Felt he had no real authority to he was a lame duck presidnt. Didn't want to start trouble at the end of his career.

*16th President of the U.S. President Abraham Lincoln(March 4th, 1861-April 15th 1865): He was president through basically what he saw as an act of agression to the U.S. Government. Not a war in his eyes. A war is between 2 sovern nations and the south was not one of them. It was still a part of the United States.

*17th President of the United States Andrew Johnson(April 15, 1865- March 4, 1869. Was Lincoln Vice President and finished Lincolns second term in office): People will say the war was over April 9th, 1865 when Lee surrendered, but there were still little fights here and there. Sherman was still chasing rebels or the southern army in the Carolina's. Johnson issued an order in 1866 stating all fights relating to civil war are now done with.
