This is for a Hard Drive
Its not just pull it out and pop the new one in. There is a adapter over the pins on you old drive that has to be pulled very carefully and moved to the new one the same way. Also there are some laptops that will not take a certain size drive. For example some older dells you can only install a 60Gb. drive or smaller.
Take your time while changing it and you will be all set.
A CD drive is quite easy. sometimes you will have to use the new upgrade disk that comes with a new drive. This is to change the firmware for that drive.

A hard drive is not a "dvd/cd burner thing".
I think you are asking how difficult it is to replace the dvd/cd burner, in which case, VERY easy. you just have to find the ABSOLUTE correct replacement..not sorta could might fit. It must be the EXACT replacement or it will not work. There are no cables to touch. It slips in..period
However, if you are really looking to replace the hard drive, you need to realize that you will lose your operating system (ie Windows XP) unless you are able to clone your current image FIRST onto the replacement hard drive, or have somewhere else you can store it. Of course if you have the original operating system disks, than you'll only need to find and reinstall all your applications (like MS Office) and your data files.
Best bet is to go to Best Buy - Geek Squad.
Let them do a back-up and restore and your problems go away..
But first, be sure you know what you are replacing and why
Good Luck

Replacing a CD burner in a laptop is fairly easy. Most CD bays in laptops are modular, and simply slide out of their housing. You shouldn't have any cables to connect, eihter, as the connectors are usually socket-types that plug into the back of the drive.

For a laptop, you just get a replacement dvd, release your old one (usually a pull-out), and pop it in.
