Unless you're after some obscure name the chances are that it will have been taken.

As to which is the best company - that depends if you just want to register a domain name or if you want it as part of a webhosting package, and if so, what sort of package You'll have to go through a company and my advice would be to use an established one that's got a good reputation.

You don't need to ask a company to buy it for you - you should register the name yourself using online facilities, that way you're only paying for the name and not the company's time.

Yahoo provide this service - http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/domains/ and there's a list of many other registry operators here - http://dir.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/Internet/Domain_Name_Registration/Top_Level_Domains__TLDs_/Registry_Operators/

If it's acceptable, come up with a similar name and use it. If you have to have the original, type it in your browser and see where it brings you. If it's some small operation that has the site, make them an offer for the domain name, then go through any web host to set it up. If some big company is using the site, you can pretty much forget about it.

you're caught. somebody has offered the area, yet no longer greater it. that's like driving down the line and saying noone owns the valuables, becuase noone's equipped a house on it. you're able to do a WhoIs seek to work out who owns it, or there are area websites which will music down the owner and attempt to purchase it. Use the URL under for the WhoIs seek

Domain names can be bought from any vendors. You could buy them from companies who provide hosting space for your websites like www.bluehost.com or www.godaddy.com.

Alterntively, you could also ask Yahoo to buy it.

you can track down who ownes to the name and there contact details through whois
http://www.whois.net/
this will also tell you when the domain name will expire and may allow you to buy it on expiration
