This hood is supported by 4 legs that rise about 2-2.5 inches. What is the purpose for the opening at the bottdm (of the hood)that the legs create?

I'm having trouble fitteng a new tank and was wondering if I could cut down the legs so the hood sits directly over the vent on top of the tank.

Thanks!!

Don't remove them. That helps the flow of exhaust. It pulls fresh air in while sucking the fumes up .

That is part of the vent system for your gas water heater.

The hot gases will rise and exit out the vent. As the gasses flow up the vent they will create a venturi effect and suck more air into the pipe, and this will help cool the exhaust temperature So don't mess with the vent hood.

Unless you new heater tank is made for a SEALED vent, don't do it. It needs this space or it will cause to much draft (wind) inside your heater, that would cause pilots blowout or iregular flame burn which would result in poor water heating and burner failure.

this openeing is what helps create the draft that pulls the fumes from the gas burner out of your house...do not alter this in any way..instead shorten the pipe somewhere on the female end...

i agree with everyone else.dont mess with the hood.you can buy a flexible flue(the pipe that goes on top of the hood).and it will bend and shape anyway you need to get it to fit.this part is under $10.00.
