they don't get any respect because they're involved in what...7, 8 plays AT THE MOST? the rest of the team plays 20+ plays in a game.

Truth be said, a kicker will make the difference in about 2 games a season. Yes, every team needs one, but unless they miss a kick, they don't get noticed. Remember Gary Anderson in 1998? He made every kick that year, and it was no big deal. The one he missed, cost the Vikings a playoff game. Kickers are physical, but unless 10 other people screw up, they don't need to make tackles. Going with Elliott's logic, quarterbacks don't need respect either. If one of them is sneezed on, it's a flag. If a defensive player gets tackled by one, they are not allowed to sit with the team for 2 quarters.

aside from Veniteri it is because Kickers seem to be very interchangable in the NFL. Neil Rackers was one of the best in the 2005 season, but in 2006 he missed a bunch. same with Vanderject. he WAS the most accurate kicker in the nfl, and now he's lucky if he makes a extra point

Because they aren't really a part of the team. They come on for one play and sit on the bench, while everyone else is sweating and bleeding on the Field, the kicker sits back, and drinks some Gatorade.

Good kickers do get respect - others have already mentioned Viniteri. Other hightly respected kickers (both of them ex-Chiefs) Jan Stenerud (the only kicker in the hall of fame) and Nick "the Kick" Lowery.

They kick the football, that's all that they do. When they practice, they kick the football. They should make every kick, but they don't because they think about it too much. A kicker has to earn their respect and the only kicker that has done that is Adam Vinatieri.

They don't get respect because football is a collision sport. Players get penalized if they touch a kicker most of the time.
If a return man gets tackled by a kicker, he gets humiliated because he was caught by a skinny, non-athletic, one-bar-helmet-wearing slowpoke.

They have to earn it. You think Vinetari doesn't get respect? If the Dallas kicker actually stopped Seattle's lineman or slowed him down by more than giving him a love tap, that would have given Romo enough time to atleast get the first down. That would have earned some respect right there.

Garo Ypremian (sp?) was important to the 1972 Dolphins but I doubt "I kiick futball" gained lots of respect.
