All time: Sayers or Jim Brown

Right now the best RB is LaDainian Tomlinson he can run with power and finess he can catch the ball and is also a decent blocker. Oh yeah he can THROW the football too there is nooen better in the current NFL.

As for all time it is really close between Tomlinson and Barry Sanders. All round RB being a Lions fan this really hurts but I have to say Tomlinson but as a pure runner noone comes close to Barry.

As for Emmit Smith he had one of if not the best OL in NFL history and it still took him 5 years more than Barry to beat him.

Jim Brown - Was a man amongst boys in a time when the talent level in the NFL was no where near what it is now.

Walter Peyton is a close 3rd but he still had more to work with than Barry and if Barry stayed another 2 years he would have past Walter no doubt.

Wow, that is a tough one, but it depends on how you measure a running back. Some may say Barry Sanders, and with good reason, no offensive line to speak of, crappy team, everyone keyed on him every play every year, only played for ten years and is ranked third all time rushing. Most guys play 13-14 years and don't get close to him. But if you go in terms of heart, Walter Payton is at the top and no one is anywhere close. Was not given speed, was actually a little slow, but he made the best of what he had and he lit it up in the NFL. I think the best overall back because he could block as well as a lineman and catch as well as a wide out, and he sure made tacklers look silly. You have to mention Jim Brown, Eric Dickerson, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith, Gale Sayers, and maybe even Ladainian Tomlinson. But in my opinion, the best running back that there ever was would be Walter Payton. He gave it everything he had every down, he even played through the throwing up flu so he was tough as they come, he could block like a lineman, catch like a wide out, and of course his running style so unique with his hop steps and determination, making tacklers think twice about wanting to tackle him again. But also he was a great person, one of the best to ever play, or that I have ever seen. It is no wonder they called him sweetness.

Right now you have to say that the best running back is Ladanian Tomlinson. Runs very hard and is a hard worker as well.

In N.F.L history I think the best running back is Jim Brown. He looked unstoppable on some of his runs and was the most dominant player in the league when he played. Nobody dominated quite like he did in his prime.

Right now, I would have to agree with the lot of you and say LT to be the best now.

I would have to disagree with all and say Jim Brown. His records show for it. 5.0 yds. per carry. Only Back to average over 100 yds. a game in a career. Was nearly unstoppable when the ball was in his hands. Retired after 10 seasons with a then record career 12003 yds. This lasted for nearly 30 yrs. Walter Payton was great and had longevity and only missed one game. It also took Payton to play in more games to break Brown's yardage record.

Right now, LaDainian Tomlinson. Best overall for a career is Walter Payton. For one season, Earl Campbell was the most unstoppable I've ever seen at running the ball.

Best RB of all time is actually a tie between Jim Brown and Walter Payton, 2nd would Barry Sanders, and 3rd would be a tie between quite a few backs.

The Best Now: LaDainian Tomlinson.
He rushed for 1815 yards and 28 touchdowns in the 2006 regular season, averaging 5.2 yards per carry and 113 yards per game. He's improved every year.

The Best Ever: Jim Brown.
He played for the Cleveland Browns from 1957 to 1965. His power, athleticism, and durability bordered on superhuman. He missed no games in the 9 years he played. In 1963, he averaged 6.4 yards per carry. His career record of 5.2 yards per carry still stands, along his record 5 seasons of highest total yards in the NFL, and his record average of over 100 rushing yards in every game he played. His record of scoring 100 touchdowns in 93 games stood for 42 years, until LaDainian Tomlinson reached it 89 games in 2006. Brown accomplished all of this playing against NFL defenses who knew he was getting the ball, and still could not stop him. Jim Brown was the best running back ever, record for record, game for game, and set the standard all other running backs are measured with ever since.

As of right now, I'd say LT

All time, Jim Brown: even now, the best back ever to play. Even after retiring with good years left, his record took a couple of decades to break (even with seasons of 14 and 16 games, as opposed to 12 game seasons Brown played).
