Someone my mom's friend's black balloon mollies gave birth and now she is trying to get rid of them. She wants me to have some. I am moving 3 of my fish and getting 2 other ones I am planning to get into a 5 gallon tank. I have an 18 gallon tank with:
- 2 algae eaters (one is VERY shy)
- 3 fancy guppies (2 female 1 male)
- 2 neon tetras (1 died :-( ...)
- 2 sunset coral dwarf platies (again 1 died from tail rot...)
- 3 glow light tetras
- 2 harlequin rasboras (again again 1 died of mysterious causes....)

Are these guys compatible with black balloon mollies? Also, I am planning to get 2 honey gouramis for my 5 gallon tank and planning on moving 3-4 of my other fish, but I don't know which ones..... Please help! You guys are really generous and kind! (sometimes anyway....)

I put Marineland Ammonia Rocks in the filter cartridge everytime I have to change the filter cartridge and put in 3 teaspoons of Tetra NITRABAN! in the tank every Friday.

I can't get a bigger tank until I move out of the house (6 years I guess).

Yes All your fish are compatible with the the balloon mollies. You do need to add a few Neon tetras as Tetras do better in larger groups you need at least 3 preferably 6 all together.
Gourami's are awesome fish I have 5 of them
I have
1- Blue Gourami
1- Iridescent Gourami
1- Powder Blue Gourani
1- Dwarf Gourami
and a Giant Gourami
They will also be fine with the fish currently in you tank

It sounds as though all the fish will be compatible. I'd have to ask, though, what type of algae eaters you have. This name covers several different fish. The best type for your tank would be an Otocinclus catfish (Oto cat). These stay very small (1 1/2 inches). If it's a common pleco, it could get to be 18" long! That's way too big for your tank. If it's a Chinese algae eater, these are bad news. The first two algae eaters will be okay with other fish, but a CAE will eat the slime coat off the other fish and this can kill smaller fish. The CAEs also get to be about 10", so they would be too big for you as well.

Is this a fairly new tank, or have you had it set up for several months (or longer)? I ask because of the fish deaths you've mentioned. If this is a new tank, you might be having a problem with ammonia from all the fish. In a new tank, it's best to add a few at a time. If you don't have a test kit, I'd try to get one so you can test the water for ammonia and nitrate at least. Ammonia should be zero in all but a very new tank and nitrate should be less than 30 (and less than 20 is even better). If the levels are too high, you should do a partial water change - siphon out around 1/4 of the water in the tank with a gravel vacuum (this allows you to clean the gravel) and add new water that's about the same temperature - put in whatever you use to take the chlorine out of the water before you add it to the tank. You should do this at least once every week. You could also take a sample of your tank water to your fish store and ask them to test the water for you.

I would make sure the ammonia or nitrates weren't the causes of your fishes' deaths before I added the mollies to the tank.

Here are a few websites that have info on water changes, water chemistry, and keeping a tank healthy:

Mollies do superb with some different mollies around, they get great, a 20 gallon long is a minimum. A 30 gallon is greater effective. Even in a 30 gallon, mollies can grow to be fin nippy and attack a bettas long defensless fins. Bettas would desire to be saved in a minimum of 5 gallons. they'd no longer produce different tank friends in a tank that length. No different fish can stay to tell the story existence in a 5 gallon tank.

There should not be an issue with a ballon molly. A honey gourami is a dwarf gourami and is peaceful to fish that aren't gourami. 2 of them will tend to fight a lot.

PS- Your tank is over stocked right now. This is most likely the cause of the fin rot, and other deaths. You should check your ammonia, and nitrate levels. Do 20-30% water changes until both are in good ranges. (Ammonia good range ~= 0 ppm, Nitrate good ~= 30 ppm.)

I happen to have a large tank of fish and i now from experience that a molly will more than likely get along with other fish. Getting gourami's is a bad idea though. Gourami's do not make good "community" fish. These fish can be very aggresive. I hope this answers all your questions. If you have any more you can IM me or leave me an email. Sure. Mollies are great fish for tropical community tanks, which is what you have. The mollies will definitly add some color, and livliness to the tank. Plus they each have a great personality. Hope this helps!!!:0)

Yes they are compatible with the fish you have but I would recommend getting a bigger tank for the amount of fish you already have.
