If a slave was found escaping what would be the consequences?

Death? A Brutal Beating? A cruel slow death in front of people to humiliate you? Anyone know?

Certainly not death. Back when slavery was widespread, slaves were considered personal property, and they had to be purchased same as anything else.

They would certainly not spend all of that money only to have wasted it.

My best guess as to what the punishment would be, is that the slave owner would take away food privileges for a certain amount of time.

They wouldn't hurt the slave either, as that would hinder productivity.

it depended on the slave keeper, the country and the time era.. many just did beatings.. having loyal slaves was hard to keep.. getting slaves was expensive.. so a beating was often the best result. Everything usually revolved around money.. so taking the time to make a slow cruel death wouldnt really be worth the effort.
Death usually only occured when something horrific happened like sex or theft or rape in the household happened.

The slaves of the 1800's were property. If they were returned, they were whipped and put back to work. There was no value in destroying property. They might be put in chains and be required to work that way or be sold if enough of a nuisance.
