Ive been recently trying to get back into shape. I used to be able to run for miles on end, but stopped running for over a year. Now that Im trying to pick it back up, I notice that near the end of my run my left foot will begin to feel like its going asleep. By the end of the run its much more noticable and runs up to my calf as well. It lingers for about 30 minutes after Im finished and then just goes away. Is this something to be worried about?

This condition is called exertional compartment syndrome. If you keep aggravating the problem, you will eventually cause permanent damage to muscles or nerves. This problem is difficult to stop once it develops, so you have to really back off the running until it heals, and then build-up your mileage very slowly. Stretching helps, but for the most part, the only thing you can do is to stop the activity that is causing the problem and wait. Massage therapy and ultrasound sometimes work by increasing the pliability of the connective tissue that causes this problem.
