why don't you focus your essay on something not as broad as the Cold War in General--but more specific...like....

1) the bolshevik Revolution

2) Berlin Crisis

3) 2 Germany's

4) Comparison of the Federal German Republic (west) and the Demorcratic German Republic (East)

5) The Berlin Wall and the fight for berlin

6) The Space Race

7) The Arms Race

8) Cuban Missile Crisis

9) Spread of Communism into Asia (Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia...etc)

10) The Olympic Games and the boycotts that came from the Cold War

11) The Reagan Years

12) the Invasion of Eastern European Nations (the satelite nations)

13) The fall of the berlin wall and reunity of Germany

14) Fall of Communism and the rise of a Quasi Capitalist Russia

to name a few.

Those will be alot easier and you will be able to devote alot of details to that one subject. Besides you don't want to have the same paper as anybody else. Your teacher will be impressed that you thought outside the box and devoted your paper to a topic closer to you, especially if you can completely explain and use better details. Alot of those topics will be easier to cite also--as they will have general articles that are not as broad as just the Cold War.

In the 50's a big part was the unfounded fear of Communists sympathizers in our govt, Hollywood, et c. . People were blacklisted for working whose names were metioned. And of course there was the nulcear war potential. Even thught we had a 10 to 1 ratio of missles, people were scared of an impending attack. Eisenhouwer did build up the military, bu warned of an out of control military establishment, he was right. Thjere so much more

You might want to look at the 'domino theory'. This was the belief that communism would spread (one country at a time - like dominoes falling) throughout the world. It was a major reason for our intervention in Vietnam.
