My guess would be either he was really sick when you got him or ammonia problems in your tank. If it's a really new tank ammonia was probably the reason. If your new to aquarium keeping, here's a link that will help you understand what happens in a new tank and how best to deal with it until the tank settles in. Be sure to follow through all of the pages, there are several, but really good info on each.

Hope that helps

Did you put water conditioner in the water? It takes the chlorine out of tap water.
Second, did you float the fish before dumping him into it's tank? Next time you get a fish, dump the fish and that blue water in a zip lock baggie and close the top. Just let the bag float in the water for the tank for about 20 minutes, then dump the fish in the tank.
Sounds like the fish went into shock because of the water temp. Their water temp is to be around 75 to 82 degrees.

once you replaced the water, replaced into the hot water out of your ensure's homestead? it truly is a hazard that that water had thoroughly distinctive parameters, and regardless of the conditioner, ought to no longer have been sturdy. you moreover might might desire to be certain that the temperature is around seventy six-80 F on account that bettas are tropical fish. And as people have been announcing, the bettas will stay longer in a miles better tank particularly of a small bowl.

I've had several bettas that lived very long (5+ years).

The MOST IMPORTANT and usually the exact reason is due to a water problem.

Get a bottle of the water-dechlorinator (yellow bottle, blue label, sorry don't remember the name...Aqua-Safe?) and add a tiny bit to everything you ever put fish in. Should help.

Bettas are very very tough fish, there must be a really big reason why it died so fast.

Also, be suspicious of where you buy the betta, make sure it's healthy before you take it home.

The tank water might have had too much chlorine in it. What kind of water did you use? If it was tap water, it needs to have a water conditioner for betas used in it and it needs to sit out for a night before you put it in the tank.

Betta fish do not require filtration, or aeration. They live in small puddles in their natural habitat. The fact that your fishy was "fuzzy" means that he had fungus or Velvet. Fungus generally invades injuries or traumatized parts of the fish's body. Stress is usually the cause of a fish getting this problem, such as poor water conditions ( i.e. temperature of water). Bettas prefer warmer water, and cooler water will produce shock in a Betta. Did you use any water treatment chemicals (such as Amquel) to remove chlorine and ammonia? It is necessary to use these with any water changes. I'm sorry 'bout your fish...

Shock of changing from his old water to the new. Did you put drops in to kill the chlorine and other hazards from your tap water? If you bought it from WalMart, you can take it back for a replacement.

Sorrry to hear about this!

He obviously got a disease called fungal infection, if this accurs, you should take him to a tank hospital. He/She could be treated at your local pet veternarian. it might have needed a tad bit of salt to the water also.
