First off, how old are you? If you're at least middle school age I'm shocked you have never heard of the concentration camps.

1933-1945, pre World War II to the end of the war.

German Chancellor Adolf Hitler was interested in the Aryan race (blonde hair, blue eyes, flawless person). His answer to the "Jewish question" were the camps.

Jews were the main target, but so were Catholics, gays, gypsies, disabled, etc. Anyone not "perfect" in Hitler's eyes.

These people would be rounded up, put in ghettos for a short while, then transferred to a camp. The concentration camps were just like a prison; a place to contain people.

Death camps is where people were systematically killed by way of gas chambers, ovens, random shootings, etc.

Labor camps is where people were forced to work in factories for no pay.

11-12 million people died during the Holocaust, at least 6 million were Jews alone.

A possible website would be the Holocaust Museum in D.C., I'm sure they have a site.

Hope this helps!

The Oxford English Dictionary, 2nd ed. defines concentration camp as: a camp where non-combatants of a district are accommodated, such as those instituted by Lord Kitchener during the South African war of 1899-1902; one for the internment of political prisoners, foreign nationals, etc., esp. as organized by the Nazi regime in Germany before and during the war of 1939-45.

Concentration camps are basically a camp where one can concentrate a group of people for whatever reason. The Brits put Boer citizens in concentration camps during the Boer War and the US put citizens of Japanese descent into concentration camps during WWII. The Nazis used concentration camps as well, but took it further and turned them into death factories.

Where prisoners are placed in a camp, as opposed to a prison, with tents, etc. and they are held their against their will. This could be for anything from, they were prisoners of war, captured enemy soldiers, or they were Jews hated by the Nazis.
