I live in Arkansas and I saw a black snake with a red and yellow stripe running all the way down its back. What type is this?

This great page has a map- click the county you were in when you saw the snake and it gives you a list of photos to match up to what you saw:

Sounds like a ribbon snake to me (Thamnophis proximus)- if it was skinny and rough looking?

Good luck!

Maybe a Western Ribbon snake or a Garter snake.
