Good is in the ear of the beholder. At least he had the good sense to name his kids Dweezil and Moon Unit.

Frank Zappa was once asked in an interview "Do you aspire to be a great American composer?". He replied "I am a great American composer." I would have to agree with him. I would classify Zappa primarily as a rock musician, but his influences ranged from Igor Stravinsky, Edgard Varése to blues and doo-wop music. He did include some incredibly tight, rhythmic and complex jazz passages in his music. Listen to 'St Alfonzo's Pancake Breakfast'. (Apostrophe album; info here: http://www.progreviews.com/reviews/display.php?rev=fz-apo )

How you classify a musician is open to question, and ultimately probably a pointless exercise. Zappa was certainly a great innovator, composer and improvisor; which is surely the essence of jazz.

Zappa was a music genius. I know that title gets tossed around with quite a few people, but in Zappa's case it sticks. Zappa did not pidgeonhole himself into any one genre, he was skilled enough to cross several and quite well.
His roots were in Jazz and, as such, he blended his own unique stamp into the genre.

Check out "Hot Rats" or "Jazz From Hell".

I think the song Little Umbrellas is a very amazing song. I consider it jazz, because its nothing ulse I can label it as. It is timeless, it has its own influences.

PS-I consider the Grateful Dead one of the best jazz bands yet, particularly, their 2nd sets (of their live shows).
