Usually layers of different minerals. They may come from different layers of silt deposited on the ocean floor. They may come from a soluble layer of rock washing away and being replaced later by something else. Most of Louisiana is alluvial, so it isn't even rock. The rock likely came from somewhere else. You might have some natural sedimentary rock. Check your library for any books on Louisiana geology. PS: I was born and raised in New Orleans.
